The Nigerian Police Academy (Polac) is a tertiary institution in Nigeria. It was founded on February 9, 1976, as the Police College, Ikeja, with the aim of training male and female personnel of the Nigeria Police Force. But now the Nigerian Police Academy Polac is located in Wudil Kano State. The Nigerian Police Academy is just like the Nigerian Defence Academy NDA where military officers are trained for 5 years. The Nigerian Police Academy (Polac) is an institution of learning for police officers. It is the only tertiary institution in Nigeria that is only dedicated to training police officers. So who can apply? The answer is: just about anyone. Polac accepts applications from Nigerians who have completed their secondary education (i.e. SSCE) and who meet the minimum requirements.

The most important requirement is that

  1. You must be a Nigerian citizen by birth.
  2. You must also be between the ages of 17 and 22 years old.
  3. You must have at least five credits in WAEC, NECO or NABTEB, including mathematics and English.
  4. You must also be physically and mentally fit,
  5. You must not have any criminal record.

How To Apply For The Nigerian Police Academy (POLAC)

The application process involves few steps. First, you will need to fill an application form by visiting the Nigerian Police Academy Application Portal www.polac.edu.ng to obtain or generate Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) Code. The RRR code obtained can be used to make payment of N3,000.00 through any commercial Bank Branch in Nigeria and submit it online. Next, you will need to take the admission written test. If you pass, you will be invited for an interview with the academy’s board.

However, only candidates who obtained the minimum UTME scores which are to be determined by JAMB and purchased the Academy online application form; will only be eligible to sit for the Nigeria Police Academy Selection Examination at due time and you must select The Nigerian Police Academy Polac as your first choice.

The Nigerian Police Academy training

Before you think of how to join the Nigerian Police Academy, you must know that there will be some kind of training. The training at the Nigerian Police Academy Kano is simple but sometimes quite challenging. The first stage of training is known as the Preliminary Stage, which is a year program that assesses potential cadets for their suitability to join the Academy. Only the best and most qualified candidates will be selected to progress to the next stage of training, which is the 3 years Foundation Stage. This is where cadets are actually trained to become police officers.

The final stage of training is the final year Specialty Training Program, which focuses on specific areas such as law, forensics and investigation. Upon completion of this stage, cadets are officially sworn in as police officers.

Nigerian Police Academy (Polac) School Fees.

Please note that the cadets in the Nigerian Police Academy don’t pay school fees, rather than are being paid a training allowance in the Academy for the period of 5 years while they are undergoing the Police training.

What happens after training in Nigerian Police Academy?

Upon successful completion of the training program in the Nigerian Police Academy Kano, you will be commissioned as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the Nigerian Police Force. You will then be posted to any of the zonal commands or state commands for about one year of probation.

During your probationary period, you will undergo intensive on-the-job training, as well as receive academic training at the Police College in Jos, Plateau State. After the successful completion of your probationary period, you will become a full-fledged Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the Nigerian Police Force.
