A new attack has caused the death of at least 11 soldiers and the disappearance of 50 civilians in the commune of Gaskinde, in the province of Soum, in Burkina Faso.

Forty eight (48) people, including soldiers, were injured in the ambush that occurred on Monday, September 26, 2022, when a convoy of 150 vehicles with military escort was carrying supplies to the northern city where armed groups blockaded several areas.

News agencies linked the attack to an armed group linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL (ISIS).

Government spokesman Lionel Bilgo, who called the attack "cowardly and barbaric," estimated that 50 civilians are missing, but security sources told AFP that the death toll stood at 60.

Local sources also said the number of soldiers killed is likely to exceed the 11 reported by authorities.

The latest attack has raised further fears in the Sahelian country, where many parts are now out of government control.
