Man celebrates at his graduation ceremony in London with Biafra flag

While the Nigerian government sees the Biafra flag as a threat to the unity of Nigeria, people in diaspora believe the flag represents hope and freedom.

One those who believes the Biafra flag represents hope and freedom is Mr Emma Chuks, a London-based Igbo man who has just celebrated his BSc (Hons) graduation at the Barbican City Center in London.

Mr Chuks drew a large audience to himself at the ceremony where he raised the Biafra flag as he was called.

Participants and many university authorities present at the event applauded the man suspected of being a supporter of a pro-Biafra group, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Meanwhile, IPOB members who reacted to Mr Chuks' action described him as 'proud Biafran'.

“I was there to witness the event. It attracted a very big applause with over two thousand people present at the event. He really made us proud," said Mercy Njoku— a zonal coordinator of IPOB in London Forest Gate.
