Nigerian Soldiers Invade Ohafia Again, Ravage Communities

A new military raid has left many houses razed to the ground in some communities in Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State.

There are also fears that civilians have been killed by the soldiers who raided communities in search of “gunmen" and suspected members of the local vigilante group – Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Some residents who fled the communities said the attack began this week, a month after an earlier military raid left civilians dead and others detained.

Ms Ngọzi Okandu, whose house was razed on Friday September 23, 2022, said soldiers opened fire in her home and shot three people, including a woman.

According to her, they fired sporadically before setting fire to the family home.

“I managed to run with my children. We don't know what they did to the people who are still trapped in my community," she said.

Reports and videos posted on social media also confirmed the incident which is being condemned by many people.

As on Friday evening, there was still the presence of soldiers in the localities where the government forces claimed to be the hideout of suspected militants.

Authorities at the Ohafia army barracks described the military raid as "a shootout between gunmen and soldiers", but locals say the claim is false.

“It all began after we heard gunshots, we don't know if unknown gunmen shot at soldiers. But those burning houses now are Nigerian soldiers," said Uzochukwu Orji.
