Soldiers kill nursing mother and child in Awing, raze homes

A military raid in Awing, a town in the northwestern region of Cameroon, left a nursing mother and her child dead, with many survivors injured.

The attack that occurred on September 25, 2022 also got houses set on fire by the Cameroonian soldiers.

Locals who recounted how the incident happened said soldiers accuse them of protecting separatist fighters after they failed to provide intelligence on the whereabouts of fighters believed to be operating in the troubled area.

“The attack began in the early hours of Sunday", said a survivor who revealed that soldiers entered homes where they shot a woman and her four-month-old baby in one of the houses.

Attacks on civilians have increased in parts of Cameroon where separatist fighters are demanding an independent state of Ambazonia.

State forces and secessionist splinter groups are responsible for the extrajudicial killings and attacks on civilians they believe are against their interest.
