ECOWAS calls for dialogue in Nigeria, plead with political parties
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has called for a peace dialogue among Nigerian political parties as the country prepares for the 2023 general elections.

A delegation from the ECOWAS fact-finding mission led by Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, former chairman of Ghana's Electoral Commission, said the election should not be turned into a battle that will lead to bloodshed.

During the visit to the Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yabagi Sani, on Tuesday in Abuja to assess the preparation in implementing the objectives of the ECOWAS for the election, Afari-Gyan urged the political parties  to stop verbal attacks on each other, noting that this will not create a peaceful environment for the election.

The ECOWAS group also expressed concern about vote buying which has rapidly increased in recent years in Nigeria.

The 2023 elections are expected to be non-violent, free and fair, Afari-Gyan said.
