ESN steps up search for bandits, rescue of victims in southeast

The Eastern Security Network, ESN, has stepped up the search for violent Fulani herders and bandits in the southeast, authorities said on Friday.

The local vigilante group created by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, stepped up operations in the southeast after multiple reports of attacks and kidnappings of travelers in Enugu and Abia State.

Sources revealed that special vigilante tactics command ESN unveiled two weeks ago by IPOB authorities led by State Directorate (DOS), rescued kidnapped victims and uncovered other terrorist hideouts in Anambra and Imo.

Efforts are also underway to rescue more victims, the source said.

Meanwhile, Nigerian forces which declared 'illegal' the establishment of the ESN by Mr. Kanu, said they have dismantled other camps belonging to the ESN and arrested suspects, but the vigilante group refuted these claims and said all of its operatives were intact.

Violent attacks on communities by armed Fulani herdsmen have declined in the southeast since 2020, when the leader of IPOB established the ESN to safeguard communities and farms in the region.
