NATO to provide more air defense assistance to Ukraine

Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of the 30 -member NATO military alliance, said the alliance had agreed to provide additional assistance to Ukraine in the fight against Russian forces.

Stoltenberg made the announcement on Thursday at a press conference after a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group on Wednesday.

Stoltenberg announced at the press conference that all NATO defense ministers stand by Ukraine and will always provide all necessary support.

Lloyd Austin, the US defense minister, who also spoke at the press conference, praised NATO allies for providing security assistance to Ukraine since fighting began eight months ago.

The US will protect all NATO territory in accordance with Article 5 of the Collective Defense Treaty, he said.

In other news, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Tuesday extending food sanctions to Western countries amid worsening food crisis in the west.

The decree prohibits the export of many food products to the West until the end of the next year, 2023.
