Nnamdi Kanu: Why Malami must resign - Rights lawyer
Inibehe Effiong

A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has asked Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice of Nigeria, to resign immediately.

The lawyer who made the call after the Court of Appeal in Abuja acquit and discharged Nnamdi Kanu of terrorism, said Malami's involvement in the kidnapping and extraordinary rendition of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), is the main reason for him to resign.

He backed court pronouncement which stated that the Federal Government of Nigeria violated international law by kidnapping the separatist leader in Kenya.

“The Court of Appeal in Abuja has made a bold statement that the Judiciary will not tolerate Executive impunity. This is a strong rebuke against executive rascality. The extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu remains a heinous violation of international law. Malami should resign," he said in a Tweet.

He added that “Should the Federal Government decide to appeal against the discharge and acquittal of Nnamdi Kanu by the Court of Appeal, it must still release Kanu. This is because the liberty of a citizen cannot be stayed. There is no room for stay of execution in this kind of case."

A three-judge panel headed by Justice Hanatu Sankey cleared Mr Kanu of the alleged wrongdoing, saying the judgment of the Federal High Court ruling that asked him to answer the terrorism charges was a mistake.
