Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, said on Tuesday that the Russian military doctrine allows only defensive use of nuclear weapons, and not for offensive.

Lavrov stated this while refuting speculation that Russia is moving to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

In an interview on Rossiya 1 TV channel, the Minister said he hope those constantly speculating on the issue of a nuclear war by Russia are aware of their responsibility.

Lavrov noted that Russia is not threatening the world with a nuclear war, but he warned that the country will defend itself against any for of assault.

Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin said the bombardment of Ukraine's capital and nearby cities on Monday was in response to the destructive attack to a bridge that connects Crimea to the Russian mainland.

He described the missile strikes that reportedly killed at least six people, as “massive strike".
