Turkey's parliament on Thursday passed a law proposed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that could jail journalists and internet users in the country.

The new censorship law would jail journalists and social media users for up to three years for spreading what is described as misinformation.

The opposition in Turkey says the censorship law targets opposition and those that criticizes the government.

Human rights activists, European countries and the press frown on the new law which they had wanted scrapped on the grounds that there is no clear definition of misleading information.

The new censorship law infringes on free speech rights, rights activists have said.

Turkish opposition said the law would be struck down by the Supreme Court.
