The sum of $143 million will be used to build a barrier along Finland's border with Russia, the Finnish government has proposed.

Authorities said the fence will stop illegal entry and protect the country from outside forces.

The government reiterated the proposal as Russia continues its military operations in Ukraine, where deaths and property destruction have occurred since February 24, 2022.

Finnish border guard officials said on November 18 that construction of the barbed wire fence along Finland's long border with Russia will begin early next year.

Poland last month began erecting barbed wire fences along its border with Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave.

Many European nations are fortifying borders with Russia and Belarus since Moscow threatened "serious military-political consequences" against Finland and Sweden for trying to join NATO.
