Armed men on Monday attacked soldiers at Izombe community in Imo State, Capt. Joseph Akubo spokesman for 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Obinze said.

Akubo told newsmen in Owerri that the soldiers came under attack during a routine patrol in the oil-rich community where a shootout between gunmen and soldiers had left civilians dead.

The army spokesperson who described the attackers as “armed youths” said the soldiers where in the community to checkmate crimes.

Casualty figure was not confirmed during the briefing by Akubo on Monday, but reports by locals said three people died in the incident which also led to arrest of some residents by the soldiers.

A military raid in Izombe community months ago had resulted to the burning of houses and arrest of locals who soldiers alleged were members of the secessionist group— Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
