IPOB not a violent group, it is FG that attacks them — Ozekhome

Mike Ozekhome

A senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Mike Ozekhome, has called for the urgent release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, saying the pro-Biafra group is not violent as the Federal Government of Nigeria claims.

The human rights activist who is also a constitutional lawyer reiterated the call during the 11th Zik Lecture Series organized by the Faculty of Social Sciences at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Anambra State.

At the conference titled 'Nigeria in the Throes of insecurity towards 2023: Any Panacea?', Ozekhome blamed the federal government for self-determination movements and insecurity in Nigeria.

He said the imbalance in administration and other adverse factors prompted IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to demand a Biafra Republic referendum in the country.

The claim that Nigeria is indivisible is a joke, said Ozekhome, who added that the USSR, Sudan and Yugoslavia and other countries dissolved and broke away when their leaders thought it was impossible.

The lawyer asked the Nigerian government to obey the judgment of the Court of Appeal which acquitted Kanu, and release him urgently.

Ozekhome said the release of the IPOB leader who he says is not a separatist agitator but a self-determination campaigner, will bring peace to the country and ensure a peaceful environment for the upcoming elections in 2023.
