Nigerian soldier shoots UN pilot, kill officer and another in Borno

Two people were killed Thursday when a Nigerian soldier opened fire at a military base in Borno state, in northeastern Nigeria.

The errant soldier also shot and wounded the co-pilot of a United Nations helicopter.

Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, said the errant personnel was among those carrying out Operation Hadin Kai in the restive state.

He disclosed that a soldier and a staff of one of the non-governmental organizations that provide humanitarian support in the northeast were killed.

According to the army public relations officer, troops on the ground immediately neutralized the errant personnel.

An investigation into the incident and remedial actions are underway, according to a statement from the army on Thursday.
