Russia blames NATO for conflict in Ukraine

Alexander Grushko, Russia's deputy foreign minister

Russia has criticized NATO for its role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, saying the organization needs enemies to justify its existence.

Alexander Grushko, Russia's deputy foreign minister, said the conflict in Ukraine was caused by NATO's moves to accept kyiv as a member amid concerns over Russia's national security.

According to Grushko, the bloc's expansion is largely driven by the need to antagonize nations so they can play the role of an enemy.

“NATO is the kind of organization that cannot live without an enemy. If it had none, it would have died,” he said.
