US researchers reveal popular apps containing spyware

Researchers from US cybersecurity firm Lookout have warned that spyware could be targeting Uyghurs in and outside China.

This is done by tracking "pre-criminal" activities such as enabling a VPN or using religious apps, the company said.

Uyghur dictionaries and keyboards are among the infested apps.

Research by Bloomberg had claimed that since July 2021, a third of Uyghur-language apps shared or downloaded have been infected with strains of spyware.

According to the US cybersecurity firm, malware could be used to track separatism among the Muslim minority of the country.

Lookout based its analysis on several Android apps and linked the data collection tools to the Chinese government.
